Nomenclature and History of the Orthopaedic
The word orthopaedics word was named by Doctor Nicholas Andry in French as Orthopedie which is derived from two Greek words ‘orthos’ which means ‘correct’ or ‘straight’ and paidion which means ‘Child’. He was the first to publish orthopedie (which translated as orthopaedia or the Art of correcting and preventing Deformities in Child) in the year 1741.

In the beginning Orthopaedic surgery was restricted to the correcting of musculoskeletal deformities in child only. Jean – Andre Venel established the first orthopaedic institute in 1780, it was the first hospital for the treatment of children’s skeletal deformities. That’s why he is also considered as the Father of Orthopaedics.
Later on a lot of advancement were done in the field by the 18th century by John Hunter’s research on tendon healing and Percival pott’s work on spinal deformity. Later on in 1851 plaster of paris cast was invented by Dutch military surgeon Antonius Mathijsen. But up to 1890s era the treatment was confined to the correction in child disformity.
In current era Orthopaedics is a Medical specialisation that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with disorders in

- Joints
- Muscles
- Ligaments
- Tendons
- Nerves
- Skin
The speciality which deals with the musculoskeletal system and provides human being the ability to heal and move by treating and caring the muscle and skeletal system. Those who specialises in this Medical field are called Orthopaedist or Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Orthopaedic Surgeons mainly deals in diagnosis, care and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries to the same. The most common ailment a Orthopaedic doctor or Surgeon deals are
- Broken bones
- Primary and secondary musculoskeletal issues of a person’s Central nervous system (like tumors, injuries, trauma, congenital deformities, infection, degenerative diseases)
- Torn muscles
- Tendon problems
- Joint problems
They uses Medical, Physical, Rehabilitative and surgical methods for treating a patient. They uses surgical techniques like lasers for removing torn cartilage , arthroscopic surgery for damaged joint treatment.
Eligibility for MS Orthopaedics in India
- The candidate must be an India citizen
- A candidate, who holds M.B.B.S. degree from a recognized medical college or a foreign medical degree included in the Schedules to the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and who has obtained full registration either from the Medical Council of India or any of the State Medical Councils after completing compulsory rotating internship shall be eligible to take this examination.
- Candidates who have passed MBBS from states of Jammu & Kashmir & Erstwhile Andhra Pradesh are not eligible for 50% quota for all India. Meanwhile the candidates who were nominated by the government of India (under central pool seats) to do MBBS from these two states are eligible to apply AIPGMEE 2016 for admission. Those candidates must submit a duly signed affidavit declaring that they were nominated under central pool seats by the government of India.
- The candidates who have obtained MBBS degree from the medical colleges which are not approved by MCI are not eligible to take the examination , However, a candidate who, after passing the final qualifying examination (MBBS or the foreign medical degree recognized by MCI), is undergoing 12-month compulsory rotating internship/practical training and is likely to complete the same by 31st March, 2016 can take up this examination, but he/she shall not be eligible for admission unless he/she has completed the compulsory rotating internship and obtained full registration on or before 31st March, 2016 or the candidate produces a certificate from the head of Institution that he/she will be completing internship by 31st March, 2016.
- Registration with M.C.I./State Medical Council is necessary and its documentary proof should be furnished at the time of counselling and admission in allotted College.
- In many universities and deemed colleges if a candiade is already pursuing a MD or MS degree from somewhere is not eligible for the exam.
- If a candidate is already pursuing a Diploma degree he is just eligible for the MD or MS in the same stream in which he or she is Pursuing Diploma.
Career in the field:-
A career in the field of Orthopaedic requires a lot of dedication, patient and intense studies for years. For pursuing a career in this field a Medical Aspirant must fulfil all the things required above to take admission in Government Medical colleges any how it is not applicable for the Andhra Pradesh and Jammu Kashmir students in Private Medical Colleges. The course (Orthopaedics)
MS Orthopaedics is a course of 3 years duration, Diploma in Orthopaedics is a course of 2 years duration, DNB Orthopaedics which is equal and similar to MS Orthopaedics and is also a 3 years course duration. It involves rotating between various units within an orthopaedic department of a Private Medical College, Hospital of Government University. At the end of three years of studies, the trainee completes a thesis or dissertation and appears for the final examination of the university. The examination includes both theory and practical examination. The examiners are invited from different universities for taking up the exams. In general there are four examiners for every examine and Practical examination contains one long case and one short case for discussion. After that viva is conducted. The candidate who becomes successful is awarded MS Orthopaedics or DNB – Orthopaedics degree.
The 3 years of this Postgraduate course provides knowledge about :-
